Ye Olde Admiral Rodney
New Road, Prestbury, SK10 4HP, robinsonsbrewery.
Venue: In a world of pop-ups and start-ups, innovators and artisans, all rustling up dishes at the vanguard of cool, there’s always a place for the solid old-timers, the ‘proper’ pubs, the reassuringly ordinary joints. You know the type: low ceilings, cosy nooks, panelled walls, drinkers propped up at the bar, and suntrap terraces clustered with wooden tables and blooming with hanging baskets. And that’s the setup at this beloved pub in Prestbury. Locals perch on barstools nursing pints, newspapers are strewn across low tables to leaf through, and the end of summer party is always a good old knees-up with live music and pizza. Menu: It’s back-to-basics classics at lunchtime, but they’re packed with flavour: chilli, pies, scampi, apple pie with custard. It’s not trying to be clever; it doesn’t want to be a pioneer. It wants to fill and fatten you up and that hankering for top-notch fish and chips sometimes just needs to be sated. Go for the cheery hotpot too, with a bread roll to mop up the gravy.
Cost: Around £30 for lunch with drinks for two.
