Urban and Green
In a building dating from 1909, this unique apartment has been restored for modern living in Barcelona.
The truth is that because this apartment was empty for many years, most of its original features were preserved. It was built in 1909 by a Modernist architect, “but it’s also true that from the very first time we saw it”, explains the owner, “we decided to respect its wonderful mosaic floors, the ceiling moulding and the original woodwork such as the internal and external shutters”. For this reason, when it came to refurbish it, they only did what was strictly necessary to gain functionality. Situated in the Example area in trendy Barcelona, the apartment is on the first floor and the circular distribution means that the main three rooms are interconnected. In one of the rooms, the owner, who is an architect, has her study. The living room leads to the main bedroom which has an ensuite bathroom. No walls were taken down but the owners chose a distribution according to their needs. For
example they choose the sunniest room for the study because working there during the day is a joy. The abundant plants almost create an indoor garden as they provide freshness and a touch of nature in the city. The mosaic floor in brown and reddish colours has been the basis for the colour scheme of the apartment, with a palette in tones that go from white to brown. The main bedroom explores the same colour scheme and cushions in various earthy colours contrast with the white bedding. It’s a room filled with warmth in winter and bright and airy in the summer. The furniture is eclectic and it includes antiques as well as design pieces. In the dining area which looks onto the indoor patio, the effect of the simple wicker chairs gives the room a winter garden look that works all year round. When the Barcelona hot summer is spent in the city, the dining room is cool and pleasant for early suppers with friends.
Flowers, plants and touches of green here and there fill the space with nature and freshness.
