Using culture to study languages

-

The MFL department shouts about how great it is to study an A level language at SPH Sixth Form.

Three languages are offered - French, Spanish and German and the department has an amazing track record of results. Teachers are a mix of native speakers and passionate English linguists who love sharing their knowledge of foreign culture with students.

Small classes ensure students receive individual attention and dedicated staff can often be found providing extra support after school when required.

Students enjoy studying a wide range of European films and literature which give them an insight into the cultural life of France, Germany and Spain.

Their students last year commented that the highlight of their course was the wide variety of topics and skills involved. The course also develops the understanding of current affairs, the media and social issues such as immigration.

Gabija Vietrenkaite, a Year 13 Languages student, said: “Everything is centred around the culture of the country of a language. All the technical aspects of learning a foreign language are seamlessly weaved into the context, such as festivals, politics, music, literature and film.”
