Bugatti reveals world’s most expensive car at £9.5 million

- Bugatti has revealed its latest model at the Geneva Motor Show and simultaneously claimed the crown for the most expensive new car ever sold.

The La Voiture Noir - literally The Black Car - is a one-off hypercar designed as a tribute to the brand’s legendary Type 57 SC Atlantic.

With a price tag of £9.5 million before local taxes, Bugatti says it is the most expensive new car ever built, eclipsing the likes of the £3.65m Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita and even the one-off Rolls-royce Swepttail, thought to have cost around a total of £9.9 million including tax.

It is based on Bugatti’s existing £2.5m Chiron hypercar but has a unique carbon fibre body and Bugatti say it transforms the sports car into a grand tourismo suited for long journeys.

Under the coachbuilt skin, La Voiture Noir has the Chiron’s 8.0-litre W16 engine, producing 1479bhp and 1106lb/ft.

“Bugatti has again proved that it makes the world’s most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive hyper sports cars,” commented president Stephan Winkelmann

“The true form of luxury is individuality. ‘La Voiture Noire’ is now at the cutting edge of automobile production.

“It is a sculptural beauty with unique technology, the ideal grand tourisme.

“This is a coupé with the comfort of a luxury limousine and the power of a hyper sports car.”

The new model draws inspiration from the Type 57 Atlantic GT.

Only four of these were built between 1936 and 38, each customised to its owner’s personal tastes.

Three are know to still exist, with the location of the fourth - belonging to Jean Bugatti, son of founder Ettore still a mystery 80 years after it vanished.
