Selsey triumph in tricky conditions

- By Michael Hellyer

Selsey manager Daren Pearce was pleased with his side’s victory on Saturday, despite playing in tricky conditions.

The Blues made it backto-back wins at the weekend beating Mile Oak 3-0 at home with the goals coming from Lindon Miller, Joe Bennett, and Callum Dowdell, keeping them in fifth in the Division One table. But, Pearce added the visitors had improved since they last played each other on October 20, earlier in the season, when Selsey picked up a 1-0 victory courtesy of Ryan Morey.

“It was difficult but we played really well. We got the ball down and the lads did well considering the weather conditions. It was difficult for both sides but we played well.” Pearce said.

“They (Mile Oak) are a much improved side to when we last played them. They have signed quite a few players, and they were much improved in the way they tried to play.”

It took 39 minutes for Selsey to find their opener, as Miller slotted the ball past Mile Oak goalkeeper, Aaron Stenning. The Blues doubled their lead four minutes later when Bennett made it 2-0. The hosts sealed the game in the 83rd minute, when substitute Dowdell found himself through on goal and scored into an open net.

Pearce urged his young squad not to take their foot off the peddle as they try and close the gap on the four teams above them. They are one point off fourth-placed AFC Varndeanians.

Selsey do not have a fixture this weekend, so will travel to Midhurst, who are fighting for survival on March 23.
