Thank you to readers for supporting charity
Readers of this newspaper have been thanked for their support and donations following the success of a 12year project to help bring jobs and schools to a Gambian village.
Kanubeh, a village of 3,500 people, ‘had nothing’ when Janet and David Underwood first visited in 2007, but thanks to support from readers of this newspaper, Kanubeh now boasts an award-winning school.
David said: “We also want to thank your readers, people in and around the Chichester area for their generous donations and participation in our various fund raising events, from many concerts in local churches, to sponsored swims and walks, cricket matches, Victorian teas, bring and buy cake parties and much more.
“Too many people to name individually. However one great supporter of our charity, inspired by what we intended to do and have achieved, is David Bathurst.
“He has recited by memory the full Old Testament over a week, walked some 80 miles and also offered the delightful services of his singing ensemble Cavatina.”
Following their most recent trip, Janet and David met Gambia’s Minster for Education, Mrs Claudiana Cole, who they say was ‘most impressed’ with their work and saw one of the schools they had worked with as ‘the template for rolling out nursery schools across Gambia’.
The charity’s mission is to support and enable villages in up country Gambia to develop viable local economy and sustainable education.
An anniversary fundraiser will be held at Boxgrove Village Hall on July 1 to help raise funds for the Al ding bourne based Gambia Up county Development charity.
The evening will feature a traditional three-course Gambian dinner, with wine, cooked by a professional chef, music and entertainment and an auction. Tickets cost £20. For more information visit: www.gambiaupcountry.com
