Sidlesham WI

-

A follow up of the Sidlesham WI meeting on Wednesday, March 13.

The meeting started at 7pm prompt, apologies were received and last month’s minutes were approved.

Jerusalem was sung and the president, Sue, shared a copy of the West Sussex News which contained two photographs of Judy our treasurer at the WI Centenary Lunch.

To coincide with the

Marie Curie fund raising month, Sue had printed a copy of Wordsworth’s poem Daffodils, to accompany the Bloom of the Month competition, which was specifically daffodils this evening. Birthday cards were dispatched and the bulb catalogues, we were informed, were available from Zena.

Following this there was a short informative talk from Monica, one of the members, about five local doctors who are travelling to Lesbos, in Greece, where 50,000 refugees are currently being kept in camps.

There was an invitation to provide packs of underwear and socks for the children in these camps.

Monica offered to collect these or said that they can be brought along to the next meeting.

After our vote on the resolutions last month Sue read out the scores that had been collated across the West Sussex area and the highest scoring was ‘A Call against the Decline in local buses’ which scored 536.

The national scores are still to be announced.

The Lunch Bunch will take place on the 25th March this month and the village lunch is now to take place in the Anchor public house and not the Church Hall as previously notified.

Once the business had concluded Ken Lloyd gave an interesting presentation on the fire at Uppark House in South Harting.

The fire, which took place on the 16th August 1989, started on the roof of this magnificent country house and was further compounded by a lack of water within close proximity and the number of priceless historic objects that were homed there.

The house, which is owned by the National Trust, has since been rebuilt, but many lessons were learnt on how to deal with a fire in stately homes from this experience.

A light supper was provided after this and the bloom of the month results were 1st Marilyn, 2nd Monica and joint 3rd Sue and Ann.

The Denman Bursary was won by Gill and members were reminded that next month Easter bonnets can be worn.
