Continue to press for a say

-

The temptation to respond to yet another letter from Rory Murphy (11th April edition) is just too great.

I can assure Mr Murphy that ‘we’ will continue to argue the case for a ‘confirmatory referendum’ on whatever shambolic Brexit deal parliament manages to finally support, as the only way to resolve the unholy mess our country is currently in.

As for the Liberal Democrats, of which I am proud to be a member, our party is organised on much more democratic lines than either Labour or the Tory parties.

Our members (and only our members) directly elect our leader and also have a direct say in party policy via our Party Conferences.

We do fully support our membership of the EU, but do not pretend that there are no problems with EU.

With 28 member states (soon to be 27 if Brexit goes ahead) it is a miracle it functions at all.

We feel our place is to be part of it, arguing for the reforms we believe are necessary.

He then disparagingly refers to the printing of money by the EU Central Bank, which is of course precisely what our own Bank of England did for several years after the 2008 financial crisis until they decided it was no longer necessary.

The misplaced logic of his comparison of the 16million who voted remain in the referendum with the 6million who signed the recent ‘revoke Article 50’ petition, suggesting to him that 10million have changed their minds, can of course be applied to leave support as well.

Of the 17million who voted to leave in 2016, only about 0.6million signed the recent petition for the UK to leave the EU with ‘no deal’, which ‘means’ that 16.4million leavers have changed their minds I presume.

I and many others locally will continue to campaign for the public to be given the chance to say, given what we now know about the consequences of Brexit, if that is what they still want or should we remain in the EU with the much better deal we already have. JOHN WILTON York Road Chichester
