Flower power at the club!

Flower Power is the theme for this year’s show by the North Mundham Flower Club.

Spokeswoman Anne Lloyd-davey said: “A stark contrast to last year’s subject which paid tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, this year’s theme focuses only on the beauty and joy that flowers bring into our lives, with the exception of the category Wars of the Roses. This could be seen as a bridging link with last year’s show and brings less recent history into the mix.

“There is homage paid to the giddy days of Woodstock and Psychedelia, with a theme of Flowers in your Hair for the former and a pedestal arrangement evocative of Flower Power for the latter. Tulips from Amsterdam represents the Music category and members are asked to choose a poem to display alongside their arrangement for the poetry category.

“The annual show is always full of colour and scent and displays the superb talent and artistic abilities of the members. This year, these talents are accompanied by the themes of art, poetry, music and history.”

The show is on Saturday, April 27 from 12.30pm at the North Mundham Village Hall. A home-made cream tea included in the admission price of £2.50.

Fabled coast

The Fabled Coast: Coastal and Maritime Folklore, Superstitions and Customs will be the title of a conference on Saturday, April 27 in the Cloisters, Bishop Otter Campus, University of Chichester

Spokeswoman Heather Robbins said: “Taking its name from Sophia Kingshill’s and Jennifer Westwood’s seminal book The Fabled Coast, this conference seeks to explore the abundance of folktales, legends, myths, songs and re-imaginings associated with coastal areas and maritime traditions and practices around the world.”

Tickets £40/£30 concessions. There will be a creative writing workshop on Sunday, this feature. Soaring is an A1 canvas featuring a raised sea eagle adorned with imitation gold leaf, swooping above an abstract land. The bulk of the bird is constructed of stiffened canvas, firmly glued to the main canvas.

“Neglecting has a local interest, inspired from the time my wife and I lived in Birdham and the many years of sailing from Dell Quay. The derelict boat depicted is derived from the rotting wooden vessel that sits on the muddy harbour of Dell Quay.

The structure is another using strips of stiffened canvas and wood splinters, attached to the main A1 canvas. Most of my work is presented in floating mounted frames. Only the metre-square paintings like Boundless Dimensions and Brilliancy are without, however being a deep canvas, I ensure the paintings include the sides.”

Grahame added: “I’ve lived in West Sussex for most of adult life, having spent my formative years living in such far off lands as India, Aden and North Borneo where my father built his aviation career as an airline pilot.”
