Robinson injury is a blow to player and club

Ollie Robinson has suffered a muscle strain in his left shoulder that will keep him out of action for a number of weeks.

The right-arm seamer reported soreness following Sussex’s win against Durham in the Specsavers County Championship and a subsequent scan revealed a strain.

The 25-year-old is likely to miss the entirety of Sussex Sharks’ Royal London Oneday Cup campaign.

It is a big setback for Robinson – who had a superb 2018 season and was named Sussex’s four-day player of the year – and for the club.

But it could mean the likes of George Garton or Abi Sakande getting more chances to impress in the meantime.

Garton, after a 2018 season in which he struggled to make an impression in the first XI, has already come into the side for their opening couple of Royal London One Day Cup matches and bowled very well.

The early arrival of Pakistan Test star Miz Hamza has also given head coach Jason Gillespie more options in his pace attack – as has the presence of Chris Jordan, who is not away at the Indian Premier League, as he was at this time last year.

Jofra Archer, of course, is at the IPL and he and Jordan are both in the England ODI squad for their World Cup warm-up games.

That means Sussex will be hoping to have Robinson fit again as the weeks go by.
