Lavant WI

-

At the April meeting the president, Elaine Mallett, welcomed speaker Bill Avenell, who gave a lively illustrated talk entitled

‘Why Was the Shepherd Delighted?’

Bill explained he had always been interested in the mixture of science and superstition.

We have all grown up listening to weather lore handed down over generations, but how much of this is accurate?

For example does a ‘red sky at night’ foretell a fine day or ‘oak before the ash’ a dry summer?

Bill said atmospheric pressures and jet streams have the most influence on the weather, but folklore has its place.

The president announced that on June 26 the National WI would lobby MPS at Westminster about its concerns about climate change.

There will be a meeting on April 30 to study our historic photograph albums, because there is a need to identify the people in the pictures.

There was a very enjoyable evening to raise funds for the WI entitled ‘From cocoa bean to chocolate bar’.

It was given by Dawn from Le Salon Du Chocolat.

There will be a coffee morning at Elizabeth O’hea’s on May 30 and the WI will be baking cakes for the Lavant Fete on Saturday, June 16.
