Our April meeting celebrated Easter with chocolate eggs with our beautiful ladies in their Easter Bonnets. ‘Best bonnet’ went to Janet.

We also had Holly Austin, age nine years from South Bersted C of E school, who sold Easter cakes to raise money for Mount Noddy.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Ros Black. Her talk was on scandal, salvation and suffrage from one of her books and the amazing women of the temperance movement.

She told us about Chailey Heritage and a lady called Grace Kimmins, known for her social work in the Bermondsey slums in 1890s, the founding of a unique craft school for disabled boys in Chailey, Sussex in 1903, travelling through two world wars to the takeover of Chailey Heritage by the NHS in 1948.

Other women mentioned were Agnes Weston, the sailors’ friend, Sarah Robinson, the soldiers’ friend and Catherine Booth of the Salvation Army and other great names from amongst the suffragettes.

Next month, we have our resolutions meeting, hosted by our chairman Yvonne Price.

Our next trip out will be to Amberley Museum, straight after Easter.

In May, we are hosting our family quiz night, also open to non members, at Aldingbourne Sports Club at 6pm on May 18, including a fish & chip supper or other choices, plus pudding and tea or coffee. Other drinks to be purchased at the bar. Tickets are £10; contact Jacky on 01243 545910.
