Expert provides top advice on bras

- Vicky Meets Rachel Blackburn Bra Fitter and MD of Smitten ~Lingerie to Love

Why is it important for women to be properly fitted?

Over 80 per cent of women are wearing the wrong sized bra. A woman’s body changes shape and size throughout a lifetime, so the importance of a proper fit becomes ever crucial. A good fit also creates good posture and good blood circulation, a nice shape and support where your bust needs it most.

A good bra also gives you a waist, making clothes look and feel better. Wearing a badly fitted bra can cause headaches and neck pain and can actually cause muscle strain as the weight of your bust is pulled downward.

When should you start being fitted and how often should you check your sizing?

When a girl finds that her crop top is no longer providing enough support it is time to meet the fitter. After that we recommend a fitting once every six to twelve months, or after any significant weight loss or gain. Looking good and feeling good is interlinked, so it is important for women to invest in themselves. A good bra helps us perform at our best and improves our selfconfidence.

A fitting will provide you with the skills you need to identify the right size and shaped bra for you.

Howdidyoucometobea fitting specialist?

After years of working ‘behind the scenes’ at various educational institutions, I took my big break and retrained as a bra fitter. I had a passion for all things lingerie but never in a million years knew how much job satisfaction I’d get out of fitting ladies in their true fit. The smiles, the joy and the tears of absolute pleasure that only a good fitting bra gives is the best feeling.

How have bras evolved in recent years?

Lingerie is a multi-million pound industry and designs evolve rapidly to keep up with changing fashions. New fabrics are creating softer feel items and also providing items that keep the wearer cooler in warmer weather and warmer in chiller climates – a fire and ice design. Companies are now utilising recycled plastic in their designs, which is a great innovation.

The fabric still feels soft and gentle next to skin, but it is also gentle on the environment. New construction designs are always being worked on to provide the upmost comfort combined with great shape and support – the holy grail of a good fitting bra!

One of the most exciting innovation areas is nonwired bras. Companies are realising that women want more of a choice but with the same support and good shape provided by a wired bra.

What is the best-selling colour?

A neutral bra is the most versatile so is the most popular choice. If you don’t like the idea of a nude bra, try your favourite style in a blush - perfect for the summer and disappears under your light or white clothing.
