Stand up for what is right

-

I have read in the Observer over the last few weeks about our county council with grave concern.

The shaming report by Ofsted on our safeguarding of children and young people was disturbing, as was the terrible independent report on our fire service.

Now I read that key services of local libraries, amenity tips, housing-related services and bus subsidies are about to be cut, hitting yet again the most vulnerable.

Also in the same edition of the Observer we read that two Tory members who dared to back a vote of no confidence in Louise Goldsmith have been in one case expelled, the other suspended. Is this the end of democracy?

Do all council members simply have to be nodding donkeys and Ms Goldsmith can do whatever she likes?

Any leader with the track record of Ms Goldsmith should surely hang their head in shame and resign.

When I consider the vast sums of money wasted on the A27 consultations by this council when at the outset Chris Grayling said a resounding ‘no’ to the council’s demands my blood boils.

That money could surely have helped in keeping vital local services going.

I also remember, as I am sure many readers do, the arrogance in which we were treated over the Velo South fiasco and the complete disregard for the needs of residents and those whose businesses would have been adversely affected. Clearly Ms Goldsmith is able to ride roughshod over everybody and woe betide anyone on the council who dares to oppose her. In the name of democracy I ask that all councillors regardless of party stand up for what is right. CYNTHIA BLADES Eastview Close, Lavant
