Goodwood racing Celtic Art looked a picture as he won the feature race of Goodwood’s seven-race card on Tuesday afternoon.

Jockey PJ Mcdonald continued the form that made him top rider at this year’s Glorious Goodwood to triumph by three-quarters of a length on the 1/4 favourite in the Matchbook EBF Peter Willett Future Stayers’ Maiden Stakes.

Montanari was second in a race named after a man who was the last surviving officer of The Queen’s Bays (2nd Dragoon Guards) to have fought at El Alamein and who in later life became wellknown in racing as an expert on breeding and bloodstock. He died in 2015.

Elsewhere on the first of two midweek meetings at Goodwood this month, there was a thrilling finish in the Southern Cranes And Access EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes as Brighton jockey Jason Watson edged the honours on 8/1 shot Classic Painting for trainer Michael Bell.

Watson got the two-yearold a short head in front of runner-up Festival Day, who in turn was a neck ahead of third-placed Call Me Katie.

There was also an 8/1 winner in the Racegoers Club Fillies’ Nursery Handicap in the shape of Caspian Queen, ridden home by David Egan for Richard Hughes.

The 5/2 favourite Seaborn took the Jeb Construction Handicap under William Carver for Patrick Chamings while the evens favourite Themaxwecan prevailed in the Royal Sussex Regiment Handicap for James Doyle and top Goodwood trainer Mark Johnston.

Rose Hip and Cape Cavalli were the other winners on the day, both starting at 5/2. Celtic Art on the way to winning the Matchbook EBF Peter Willett Future Stayers’ Maiden Stakes, the feature race of Goodwood’s cars on Tuesday
