Our W.I is celebratin­g our centenary and all the members were invited to a wonderful celebratio­n lunch in August hosted by our President Margaret Finch. Margaret introduced our guest speakers Clive and Sue Fennell whose talk would be about women working on canals. When the 2nd world war started family boaters had to give up their homes and go and live on their canal boats.

The canal boats were well kept and because they cooked on a small range they mostly ate casserole type meals. The law allowed only two adults and two children on each boat and most of them could not swim although the canals were not deep, the locks were. As the men had gone to war the government used a
