Music The Esmé Quartet are the first guests in the new Chichester Chamber Concerts series starting on Thursday, October 3 at 7.30pm.

They will perform in the series’ home, The Assembly Room in the Chichester Council House in North Street. Tickets from the CFT. The quartet are: Wonhee Bae, violin I; Yuna Ha, violin II; Jiwon Kim, viola; and Ye-eun Heo, cello.

Series chairman Anna Hill said: “The Esmé Quartet, a string quartet formed of four young Korean women, made a sensational announcement of their presence on the international concert stage in April of 2018 by winning the first prize and four special prizes (best Beethoven and Mozart quartets, the Proquartet, and the Esterhazy Foundation), at the prestigious London Wigmore Hall String Quartet International Competition.

“Although it has been only two years since their formation, they have also won prizes in competi-tions such as the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in 2017 and the Audience prize at the Irenesteels Wilsing String Quartet Competition in January 2018.

“Praised for their warm sound, hyper-sensitive ensemble, and powerful stage presence, the Esmé Quartet was formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, Germany by four musicians that were long ago acquainted with each other as friends.

“They shared common interests and passions in music, the arts, and life. After working together for a trial period where they tested the waters of playing together as a quartet. They were quickly awarded the first prize in the annual internal Hochschule Köln’s Chamber Music Competition.

“Since then, the members decided to work together on a permanent basis, and devoted their energy and passion into transforming their musical and interpretive goals into a working reality.”

Anna is promising the concert will mark the start of a sparkling season ahead.

“Our aim this year as every year is to bring some of the best of artists available to play in Chichester. In order to keep abreast of the latest talent, I go to many concerts in London each year, probably two or three times a month and mostly at the Wigmore Hall and Kings Place.

“We are sure that it is the high quality of our performers and the interesting programmes they devise that keep our audience coming to the concerts. People appreciate being able to hear world-class musicians in Chichester rather than going to the time and expense of a trip to London. We are assured of this because we receive a lot of appreciative letters thanking us for organising concerts which give so much pleasure.”

The Chichester Chamber Concerts are the Assembly Room, North Street, Chichester once a month on a Thursdays starting at 7.30pm.
