Round-up The Leconfield Singers offer their autumn concert on Saturday, September 28 at Sacred Heart Church in Petworth.

Singers chairman Jeannie Whitman Esdaile said: “This is a favourite venue for the choir as we enjoy singing in the intimate setting and delicate acoustics there. Having performed in three enormous churches in Brittany, where the acoustics and distances are very challenging, our performance at home in The Sacred Heart is where we sing with a great strength and confidence!

“We do hope that you will join us that evening where the promised wow factor comes from the unique choice of music and the amazing vocal talent of over 60 singers led by our talented and dedicated choir director Graham Wili, supported by the sensational organist Philip Scriven who never ceases to amaze an audience with his incredible skills on the organ!

“With a 6pm start this could prove to be a very enjoyable evening as there will be plenty of time to book a table for dinner or drinks afterwards at a local pub! We will once again have drinks during the interval at The Angel next door to the church.”

The programme will include: Missa Brevis in D by Mozart; O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht, JS Bach; Abendlied, J Rheinberger; Geistliches Lied, Brahms; Cantique de Jean Racine, G Faure; Bogoroditsye Dyevo, S Rachmaninov; Pie Jesu, Brian Knowles; and O Magnum Mysterium, M Lauridsen.

The West Wittering charity School Appeal for St Paul’s School, Bo, Sierra Leone is holding a special sale of artwork by the late Helen Blackburne to raise funds for a school library. Helen had a long connection with West Wittering and as a professional artist, painted many watercolours, oils, pastels of the beach she loved and the surrounding area. The paintings have been donated by her daughter Francisca (Fanny) Blackburne and will be on sale the weekend of Septtember 28, 10-5pm and September 29, 10-4pm in West Wittering Memorial Hall, Elms Lane, PO20 8NG.

Harting Society’s next talk will be held in the Harting Community Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 3 when Gill Clarke will talk on The Women’s

nnLand Army in The Second World War: A Portrait.

Club spokesman John Stevens said: “Members of The Women’s Land Army (WLA) made a major contribution to increasing levels of food production during the Second World War. Yet all too often the vital work these Land Girls engaged in is overlooked. This illustrated talk presents paintings, posters and photographs to outline the revival of the WLA through to its disbandment in 1950 and tells the story of the Land Girls who battled in the fields together with those of the artists and illustrators who recorded their heroic work. “Gill Clarke was visiting professor and curator at the Otter Gallery, University of Chichester from 2012-18. Prior to this she lectured at Southampton University. She has published widely.” Leconfield Singers chairman Jeannie Whitman Esdaile
