Making recycling easier for our residents with new collection scheme for the area

- Eileen Lintill Leader Chichester District Council

As I am sure that you have heard, the Prime Minister has announced that we will move Step 4 of the Government’s roadmap on Monday July 19, which will see an end to most legal Covid-19 restrictions. It is important to remember that

Covid-19 has not gone away, so please remember the actions you can continue to take to keep yourselves and others safe.

The Government has issued guidance on this, including recommending that people continue to wear face coverings in crowded areas, such as busy public transport.

You can find out more about what will change and what you should do to protect yourselves and others by visiting: www. gov.uk/government/publications/covid19-response-summer-2021-roadmap/ coronavirus-how-to-stay-safe-and-helpprevent-the-spread#keeping-yourself-andothers-safe Earlier this year, I mentioned that we would soon be piloting two new recycling services to help residents to recycle even more. I am pleased to say that these new free kerbside collections schemes are due to start this month and will cover approximately 75 per cent of households in the district. One scheme will collect unwanted textiles and broken or unneeded small electrical items, and another will collect used coffee pods.

We are always keen to make recycling easier for our residents and to help improve recycling rates in our area, so this is something we’re very excited to introduce.

To start with, we are only able to trial these schemes in 75 per cent of the district. However, once the 12-month trial is complete we will consider if these new services can be rolled out and made permanent across the whole of the district.

This would increase the area’s recycling levels by up to 2.5 per cent.

If you’re in the trial area for our textile and small electrical recycling service, you will receive a pack from us through your door. This will include two dedicated recycling bags to keep the textiles and small electricals separate and to help our crews identify the collection, as well as a leaflet with everything you need to know about the service and how it works. You can also find out whether you are included in the trial by using our quick postcode checker: www.chichester.gov.uk/ textileandelectricalrecycling. On this page, you can also find lots more information about this scheme, including a range of frequently asked questions. If we collect from your area, you can also use this link to check your collection day, which may be different to your normal bin collection day.

We are also introducing a used coffee pod recycling trial in partnership with Podback.

Households in the trial area will receive a leaflet explaining how they can participate in the scheme, which will enable them to recycle both plastic and aluminium pods once a month using collection bags provided by Podback. Residents can check whether they are eligible for the scheme, and register, at www.podback.org.

Residents within the trial area can check their collection day online at: www. chichester.gov.uk/podback.

These two new schemes will expand on the existing recycling collection services that we already offer, and will further help to reduce waste. This is a really positive move forward and is just one of the ways in which we are working hard to enable residents to make a positive difference to their local environment.
