Midhurst Rother College and Winchester College in Partnership

-

Midhurst Rother College and Winchester College have a strong educational partnership, built on a continuing educational dialogue and a sharing of resources, personnel and opportunity. Staff and governors share their expertise and dedication to education. Winchester teachers spend part of their training at Midhurst whilst Winchester helps with our students’ practice for university interviews. There are regular sports fixtures and joint activities to strengthen the partnership.

Year 8 Students from the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) group at Midhurst Rother College attended Winchester College. The aim of the session was to teach French through nonlanguage subjects. The group was given a tour of the College in French, learning about the historic buildings and how the College has changed over time. They had a hands-on session with Suzanne Ceiriog-hughes from the College Treasury where they puzzled out what some historical artefacts were. This was followed by a forest school session with Dan Wright, the Duncan Louis Stewart Fellow of Natural History at Winchester College. Here they were guided through how to light a fire, before cooking sausages and toasting marshmallows, all in French. A sing-along to Frere Jacques in the round made this a unique experience.

Year 13 students from Midhurst Rother College visited Winchester for a day of Science, Engineering and Maths. The day began with team-building engineering challenges to build stable pylon and bridge structures followed by some experimental data gathering.

The students then split into subject specialisms with the biologists performing a rat dissection and looking at their specimens under the microscope; the computer scientists looking at maths and logic problems; and the physicists conducting experiments on drag using the wind tunnel.

Students applying to

Oxford and Cambridge were also given mock interview practice and feedback from the

College Dons.

Most recently Year 10 linguists from MRC were invited to a festive French day. Ms Charpentier and Mrs Good accompanied twenty-five students for a very interesting day at Winchester College touring the campus, looking around the longest established boarding school in England. The tour was conducted in French of course and so allowed the students to practise their listening and comprehension skills.

The tour was followed by lessons in French giving the students a chance to revise vocabulary through quizzes and show off their speaking skills too.

The visit finished with a browse around the city’s Christmas market. MRC are very hopeful that they can recommence their annual trip to Christmas markets abroad in December 2022!
