The Moncrieff-bray Gallery summer exhibition from May 6-June 25 will feature more than 50 artists and sculptors, selected from Land’s End to Ullapool.

Former curator and arts writer Elspeth Moncrieff established the Moncrieffbray Gallery in 2005.

“The summer exhibition takes place in our converted barn and landscaped gardens with stunning views over the Rother Valley. Over 50 artists and sculptors are drawn from all corners of the British Isles.

“The work is selected with a commitment to quality, integrity and originality from established and emerging artists alike. Sculpture ranges from small-scale intimate works for interiors to stunning large pieces for the garden.

“Established 17 years ago, the summer exhibition has become a highlight in the West Sussex art calendar.

“New work by some of our best loved artists such as John Hitchens, Jilly Sutton and Oona Campbell are shown alongside exciting new talent, including Michael Chaikin’s giant articulated fish which ‘swim’ in the wind and

Jeremy Moulsdale’s lyrical figures.

“We are proud to show work by many leading British contemporary stone carvers, among them: Jonathan Loxley, Paul Vanstone, Dominic Welch, Guy Stevens, Aly Brown and Tim Pomeroy. Complementing these pieces are Mike Savage’s organic pod forms in beaten copper, Jilly Sutton’s striking carved wooden heads and kinetic works by Will Carr and

Michael Chaikin.

“Within the gallery, vibrant work by Scottish Colourists Jean B Martin and Ann

Oram are complimented by sweeping landscapes of the South Downs by

Rosie Copeland and Lucy Marks. Gareth Edward’s elegaic abstract landscape is contrasted with the dynamic abstraction of Spencer Shakespeare and Malcom Taylor.

“This is an exhibition which celebrates many of the finest aspects of contemporary British art.

“This, combined with its spectacular rural setting, only five minutes from the antique and artistic hub of Petworth, make it a unique destination.”

Elspeth worked for many years as a curator at the V&A, before becoming deputy editor of Apollo magazine and subsequently art market correspondent for the Art Newspaper. She has published several books and applies her experience of the international art world to her South Downs gallery.

It is based in a group of 18th-century former farm buildings on the edge of the Petworth estate; a spectacular oak framed barn houses the interior gallery space, whilst the surrounding landscaped gardens are an ideal setting for domestic sculpture.
