Bognor girls in the pink – bowlers lift shield
Bognor Rugby Club under-16 girls travelled to Newbury for their last league game of the season.
The Pink Flamingos were reduced in numbers, resulting in a team of 12 making the journey.
This meant a number of positional changes, making the game more challenging, and the girls really had to up their game.
The player number changes showed and Bognor took their time in finding their stride and control, especially against a home team who were determined to impress their crowd by striving to claim a win against the top of the league team.
In a very physical and spirited game, Bognor scored first
and converted, but Newbury responded quickly without converting. Bognor came back and scored three more
tries without converting, but certainly couldn't relax. Half time: Bognor 22, Newbury 5.
The second half mirrored the first with end-to-end play and brilliant defence from Bognor, preventing a clearly determined Newbury from scoring.
Eventually Newbury did break through, but the Flamingos responded with one more conversion. Final score Bognor 44, Newbury 10.
Try scorers were Nicole Dobrucka and Rana Coskun with one apiece, Matilda Smith, Anna Scrivens-wood and Lily Smith each getting two, with conversions by captain Lily Smith.
Seven wins from seven games mean the Pink Flamingos are grand slam winners of the HOB U16 Girls’ League – a first Bognor Rugby Club and something for the team to be proud of.
