Sun shines to mark start of new season

Before play commenced, Club President John Walters welcomed all members, old and new, to the 2023 season.

A minute’s silence was then held for members sadly lost during the closed season, former Captain Peter Howick, Sue Buckle and Club Treasurer Chas Campling.

Deputy Mayor Richard Plowman opened the green by delivering the first wood of the season.

All six rinks were used in a match between the President and the Captain, with the Captain's team running out marginal winners 59-40.

The club has a full fixture list, which includes a Public Open Day on the June 3, when members of the public will be encouraged to come along and give the sport a try.

CRABLANDS

What a great turnout for the club’s new bowlers invitation day.

Some 37 people turned up to try their hands at bowls after members spent two Saturdays promoting the event in the High Street.

Richard Humphrey and Mikey Lockyer also persuaded passers by to come and have a go. A total of 26 people left requests for free coaching and four people signed up on the day. Lots of visitors were able to chat with members who turned up on the day to help..

ARUN

Arun’s ladies teams, captained by Ros Hanbury, are Sussex League winners.

They took on and beat a strong Eastbourne IBC team winning three games to Eastbourne’s two, scoring 92 points to Eastbourne’s 79 at Wealden IBC to win the league for 2022-23.

The teams were presented with the champions’ trophy by the County President Lynn Hathaway. The competitio­n will now be held at Arun for the next year.

DONNINGTON

Donnington SMBC had its annual meeting, which 27 members attended. It began with a minute’s silence to remember Sean Fitzsimons, who died recently.

The present committee were all re-elected for another year. Allan Banham, who has been chairman since 2017, announced he would not be standing for election again next year. He thanked members for their support for the club throughout the year, and commented how everyone worked well to make it a happy, social club.

Summer bowling restarts next Wednesday at 7pm.
