To mark the King’s Coronation people were called on to volunteer as part of The Big Help Out on Monday.

Volunteers across the Chichester district were keen to take part and helped in various ways.

Chichester’s three Rotary Clubs were joined by volunteers from West Walls Residents Association and Priory Park Society to clean up areas of the city, something they do as part of Operation Spring Clean, an initiative of the City Centre Task Force.

Richard Plowman, Deputy Mayor and organiser, said: “The Big Help Day for the Coronation gave us a wonderful opportunity to show the great work done in tidying up the city to welcome visitors to Chichester. It was very good to hear passers-by commenting and congratulating the volunteers on helping make the city centre more attractive. Small things like painting the railings, tiding up the flower beds, cleaning the hand rails can make a real difference.”

Over at the RSPCA Mount Noddy centre in Chichester, 10 green-fingered volunteers mucked in as part of the Big Help Out event.

Volunteers gave up their time to help work on a rewilding project at the centre – which is run by RSPCA Sussex West Branch – including building planters, putting up bird boxes and creating a wildlife pond, in the centre's dedicated wildlife area.

Mount Noddy centre manager Susan Botherway said: “We’re so grateful to those who gave up their time to help us as part of the Big Help Out. We’re proud of the wildlife area in a copse that we’ve developed at the centre – and the efforts of volunteers will help ensure this area thrives.”

A total of 11 sailing clubs and other organisations around Chichester Harbour spent two hours litter picking as part of the Big Help Out. The 410 volunteers, adults and juniors, collected 525kgs of rubbish saving it from ending up in the waters and environment of Chichester Harbour – Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Right Royal Clean Up was co-ordinated by Chichester Harbour Federation

Chichester Canal volunteers showcased the work they do as part of the King’s Big Help out initiative. Despite the chilly weather, a steady flow of local people (and visitors from further afield) stopped by to learn more.

The Chichester Canal Trust said it looks forward to an influx of new volunteers.
