We have news from Witterings, Crablands, Pagham and Petworth in our latest roundup from the bowls greens.

WITTERINGS BC

Witterings 81

Crablands 79 (friendly) The club’s first match of the season produced a very close result, with Witterings winning by two shots overall. It went to the last two rinks finishing to complete the win.

Rink 1 won by two shots followed by a draw on rink four, a loss on rink two and a win on rink three.

A good time was had by all followed by refreshmen­ts in the Pavilion.

Crablands will be looking for revenge when Witterings play them at Crablands.

Scores: Paul Chivers, Kevan Paige, Doug Holden, Gwilym Morgan(s) won 1816; Stuart Hooker, Adrian Martin, Phil Hand, Bryan Smethurst (s) lost 15-24; Ron Prior, Fred Knotts,ian Harper, Ken Clark (s) Won 25-16; Tom O’donnell, Brian Barnes, Eric Shoyer, Lindsay Bangs (s) draw 23-23. Norfolk 80

Witterings 62 (friendly) A sunny and blustery afternoon saw five mixed triples ravelling to Littlehamp­ton.

The green had only been open two days and it was most of their team’s first game of the season.

The green was spongy and heavy but became a little easier during play. Rinks one and three both won their matches by one shot and rinks two, four and five all lost. The final score was 80-62 in Norfolk’s favour, a pleasant afternoon with everyone looking forward to upcoming return match.

Scores: Colin Carter, Anne May, Ken Clark (s) won 15-14; Derek Sparkes, Debbie Martin, Gwilym Morgan (s) lost 9-17; Allie Mill, Doug Holden, Bryan Smethurst (s) won 19-18; David Buckton, Diane Leach, Ian Harper (s) lost 9-14; Adrian Martin, Chris Bruce, David Gibbons (s) lost 10-17.

Wittering 39

Crablands 49 (friendly) Scores: Allie Mill, Mau

reen Mulligan, Carole Tuffin (s) lost 11-16; Sandy Paton, Lesley Thomas, Diane Leach, Ros Hanbury (s) lost 11-19; Margaret Bowell, Sheila Currell, Val Hooker, Julie Mulligan (s) won 17-14.

In the Men’s Top Club preliminar­y round match versus Worthing, in the two-bowls singles.

Paul Chivers won; in the four-bowl singles, Ron Prior lost; in the four-bowl pairs, Gordon Silva/bryan Smethurst lost; in the threebowl triples, Fred Knotts/ Mark White/ken Clark won; in the two-bowl fours, Dave Mill/ian Harper/eris Shoyer/lindsay Bangs won. That meant Witterings won by three discipline­s to two.

PAGHAM

The bowling green at Swansea Gardens is open and Pagham have played two important matches. Thiey played away at Aldingbour­ne, on their artificial surface, in the BM mixed league and lost on both rinks. Scores: Peter Otto, Gill Conley, Skip Pete Wakeford lost 14-20; Mukesh Andani, David Westcott, Skip Jenny Robini lost 9-27. Result 23-47.

They also played a strong Tarring Priory team in the Bowls England National Double Fours. Pagham managed to win on both rinks for a 37-27

victory. They now await the winners of the Chichester v Norfolk game. Scores: Robert Pearson, Terry Hayes, Roger Dear, Skip Mike English. Won 19-11; Dan Cripp, Chris Stone, Pete Wakeford, Skip Richard Read. Won 18-16.

This Saturday, Pagham BC are holding their first come and try session, from 10am until 12.30pm. Refreshmen­t will be available.

Flat bottomed shoes should be worn – all other equipment will be provided and instructio­ns will be given. It is planned to hold another open day on the morning of Saturday, May 27 as part of the Bowls England Big Bowls weekend.

The club are also taking part in the Bowls Big Bash during June. Details can be found on the Bowls England website.

CRABLANDS

A close friendly men’s match at Witterings resulted in a loss of 79-81.

Scores: Richard Green, Albert Humphreys, Dave Osman and Tony Dade won 24-15; Nigel Crump, Denny Terry, Lew Lewendon and Alan Bateman drew 23-23; Mikey Lockyer, Kevin Gibb, John Cornwell and Trevor Palmer lost 16-18; Mark Beeby, Bill Taylor, Peter Blackman and Ian Ford lost 16-25. Crablands ladies hosted Witterings in a friendly, winning 49-39:

Scores: Sylvia Ballinger, Julia Mcclaren, Carole Cornwell and Lesley Duff won 19-11; Pat Osborn, Melva Bateman and Chris Lewendon won 16-11; Sheila Plaistow, Val Foyle, Cheryl Brown and Sarah Fewster lost 14-17.

PETWORTH

Petworth played host to neighbouri­ng Fittlewort­h BC in their first fixture of the 2023 season.

Some close rinks were played in the drizzle, but the home team took the win.

Gavin Jones, Jeanne Brown and Marc Lancaster were top rink for Petworth.
