What a load of rubbish!

-

More than 400 volunteers took part in the Right Royal Clean Up around Chichester and Langstone Harbours and beyond, organised as part of the Big Help Out for the King’s Coronation.

Organised by the Final Straw Foundation (FSF) and the Chichester Harbour Federation, the event saw hundreds of kilos of rubbish collected along the coast, from East Sussex to Portsmouth. Fittingly, the event fell on the 97th birthday of Sir David Attenborough.

In total 432 volunteers picked up a huge 591 kilograms of rubbish from around the area.

FSF and the Chichester Federation enlisted the help of 11 sailing clubs in Chichester and Langstone Harbours to run clean-ups across the harbours. A huge part of the rubbish picked up was plastic food and drink packaging, including crisp packets, sweet wrappers, plastic and glass bottles and aluminium cans.

In Emsworth, 104 volunteers joined FSF at Emsworth Sailing Club to clean up the area. Collaborating with the Bridge to Unity, another local non-profit group, the Final Straw Foundation was happy to see 66kg of rubbish collected from the shoreline and town.

Bianca Carr, CEO of the Final Straw Foundation, was thrilled with the turnout. "We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who came out to help.”

Sue Nash, from the Chichester Harbour Federation Environmental Forum, said: “We were happy to see that so much rubbish was removed from the marine environmentandlocalpublicspaces.”

The Garden Show is back at Stansted Park from June 9 to 11.

The event, held at various locations in the south, was created in the 1990s as a forum for smaller businesses and talented individuals to showcase their work.

The first show consisted of about 30 enthusiastic stands and an art exhibition.

But the show has expanded since then and is now the perfect place to find all you need to make your garden grow and refresh your home.

You can browse stalls showcasing the latest specialist plants, garden and home accessories, art, design, sculpture, fashion, gifts and then treat your taste buds to tempting foods and wines, and pick up top tips from horticultural experts. Tickets on the gate are £12 for adults, £10 seniors, £4 juniors. But you can save by booking in advance via www. thegardenshowonline.com
