The Sussex County Smallbore Rifle Association says it’s been a steady start for young and old Sussex marksmen in the winter season.

The Sussex junior and veteran prone rifle teams find themselves in second position in their respective National Inter County leagues after the first three rounds of the winter short range season.

The Sussex juniors beat near neighbours Kent in the first round by 375 to 367 before narrowly losing their second round match to Devon by 365 to 368.

Round three saw them score a creditable 378 to beat Bedfordshire’s 370.

Eastbourne’s Henry Stevens and Harry Pratt of Balcombe top the team’s averages with 94.67 apiece, closely followed by Finley Steer of Southwick with 93.33.

The Sussex Veterans also had a very consistent start to their season beating Cheshire & North Wales 489-483 in round one and Aberdeenshire 491-387 in round two – before narrowly losing to table-topping Devon in round three by 489-490.

That round three setback leaves the team in second place in Division 1 but with everything still to shoot for.

Chichester’s Peter Leggett currently has the top average with 99.0 followed by club team mate Nick Pike and Eastbourne’s Bill Richards each with a 98.0 average.
