Awards celebrate city’s community champions
The Chichester City Council Assembly Rooms buzzed with excitement on February 13th as the Chichester Annual Awards unfolded, honouring individuals and organisations whose outstanding contributions have enriched the fabric of the community. Hosted by Mayor Craig Gershater, the ceremony welcomed winners and their guests with warmth and celebration.
The evening commenced with the presentation of the Civic Award, bestowed upon Lois Cope, a pillar of the community known for various charity work, community work and her dedication to the Girl Guides and unwavering support for Chichester's twinning cities, Ravenna and Valletta.
Bishop Luffa School’s Rasa an do lena captured hearts and minds, earning Civic Awards for their extraordinary efforts in uplifting young lives and raising funds for Ukrainian students. Susie Cooke, their nominator, praised their passion, commitment, and invaluable support to the city.
In recognition of their remarkable endeavours, the West Walls Residents Association clinched the Community Award for their renovation of the war memorial garden, transforming it into a serene sanctuary for all. Equally de serving, the milk spot secured the Community Award for their compassionate initiative – a free drop-in centre aiding new mothers navigating the challenges of newborn care, as eloquently highlighted by expectant mother, Councillor Louise Pramas.
Sue Doggart, wife of the late Hubert Doggart, was honoured with the prestigious Blue Plaque, commemorating her husband' s legacy as an illustrious test cricketer, historian, and educator, whose residence at The Farmhouse in Westgate left an indelible mark on chi chester' s history.
The Heritage Awards celebrated architectural endeavours that breathed new life into chi chester' s historic landscape. Pallant Court, under the stewardship of Lois and Toby Meade, earned accolades for the meticulous restoration of 10 West pa ll ant, a grade ii listed house. Additionally, St John’s Chapel garnered recognition for its pains taking renovation of the Grade I listed chapel’ s forecourt. Lastly, the transformationof the chi chester city arts Centre by The Jackson family, into the permanent home of the Rosemary Bell Academy of Dance underscored this group’s commitment to preserving heritage while fostering artistic expression.
Amidst heartfelt citations and speeches, the evening culminated in a convivial drinks and canapé reception, accompanied by the melodious tunes of pianist Jasim Rahman.
