Boxing events will thrill this week
Brilliant results in two major competitions were the highlight of an amazing year for Chichester and Fishbourne Croquet Club.
So said chairman David Russell at the annual meeting at the Fishbourne Centre.
One was coming second in the national final of the Golf Croquet Federations Shield, when the club quartet played a team which included two international players.
The other was retaining the Centenary Cup at Littlehampton which they had won the previous year.
David said that the amount of effort and expertise put in by the committee through the playing season and in the winter deserved credit.
This included administration, maintenance, and dayto-day tasks.
In addition, the planning sub-committee were working towards the installation of a new clubhouse and looking to raise funds.
He said: “I am immensely proud of the club. So many people pool together to make this club successful and buoyant.”
Treasurer Paul Robinson said funds were healthy, with costs being kept down by members carrying out many of the necessary tasks, particularly mowing and hedging.
The committee was reelected: Chairman David Russell, Secretary Joyce Parkin, Treasurer Paul Robinson, Sally Short, Chris Fuller, Tony Elkin, Anthony Hicks, John Effingham and Margaret Cooper.
Award winners were Janet Mellor, Anthony Hicks, Neil Humphries, Sally Short, Joyce Parkin, John Effingham, Joan Felton, Chris
Fuller, Eve Fuller and David Milne.

Football coach Warren Pye will be happy to gain a points win when he makes his boxing debut on Saturday.
The Wick FC assistant manager, who also runs a youth team at Felpham Colts, is lacing up the gloves for the Ultra White Collar show at Westgate Leisure, Chichester, and is looking to pack a punch.
Pye has trained for a long time at the Beehive gym in Bognor, run by his close friend and pro boxer Liam Griffiths, and is putting in extra rounds at Fitbox in Chichester.
“I’ve had an itch to get in the ring for a long while and have been training with Liam for five or six years,” he said.
"We’ve spoken about me having my first white collar fight and after entering an extended period of sobriety I decided to have a goal to aim for. I’m sparring with Tom Nicholls, who also trains at the Beehive, to get me in the right shape and frame of mind.
"Liam will be with me and I wouldn’t have anyone else as my corner man.”
BATTLE OF BOGNOR
After a ‘Battle in Bognor’ tournament last November was a roaring success, organisers are looking forward to another this Sunday at the arena in Westloats Lane.
Last time they hosted 22 quality amateur matches – 11 Bognor boxers faced boxers from across the country. Bognor ABC boxers won all the contests they fought in.
Around 300 people supporting that event and this Sunday they’d love even more.
Pay on the day – £20 for adults, £10 children. Proceeds go directly back into the club.
