The story of George Hurst and Hurst Performance first appeared in 2012. It’s been revised and updated for 2020. Without the earlier book to compare with it, I cannot determine what has changed but suffice to say, this is a hefty volume nearing 200 pages, with a detailed and comprehensive account of the products developed by Hurst and his partner Bill Campbell.
It covers the special relationships the company established with the major car manufacturers and the various race cars Hurst campaigned for both the thrill of competition and to demonstrate the quality of its wares. The company began producing alternative motor mounts to aid engine swaps, but most readers will recognise Hurst as the manufacturer of performance gear shifters, something at which the business excelled. How Hurst marketed and supported its products is covered in detail as it was something Hurst was particularly adept at doing.
Given George Hurst’s passion for motorsports it’s not surprising the company’s race and match cars are described in detail. The company’s relationships with AMC, Olds and Mopar are each given a chapter and the later history of how the company changed hands is explained. Current owner B&M Automotive Group keeps the brand alive and still competitive today. A fascinating history, it’s a must for drag racing fans.
