TV plonkers
Dear Classic American,
I was watching a programme on the TV – The Ten Best Cars – and one of them picked out was the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, and one of the judges was Drew Pritchard, who said of the car, it should have been buried. What a stuck-up plonker! I think somebody ought to tell him Rolls-Royce borrowed the auto ’box from General Motors. The American cars were miles ahead of the English cars of the Fifties. Imagine all the 1959 English cars at the side of all the American cars of the same year at a car show! Another anti-American car plonker

You could also add that Rolls and Royce and a whole host of other luxury manufacturers made use of other elements of GM technology. Everything from air conditioning to power-seat and window technology. For many years American cars have been easy targets for the British motoring press; yet slowly but surely these attitudes have begun to change…
