1970 PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRD
1970 was a classic year for Chrysler. Both Plymouth Superbirds and Dodge Daytonas pulverised the opposition on the NASCAR Grand National race circuit. The awesome Superbird, with its droop-snoot front end, sleek body and enormous rear stabiliser wing, was capable of more than 220mph in racing trim. From Plymouth dealers, it came with a four-barrel, 440cu in engine as standard, though a six-barrel 440, a racing 426 Hemi and four-speed manual transmission were optional. Surprisingly, less than 2000 Superbirds were sold in 1970, and it has been said that dealers were forced to slash prices on many of those in order to accommodate the next year’s model on the showroom floor.
