Electric dreams?

-

Dear Classic American

Just been reading the letter in January 2022 issue (excellent by the way) regarding electric power. I have been in and around American cars since my teens, which makes me feel extremely old just writing that. I love the burbling V8 noise – even better with cam and performance upgrades. I never thought the day would ever come when I remotely sided with anything electric? Governments everywhere are trying to put a save the planet sticker on anything that might get them a vote. A lot of the cr*p they come up with is simply nonsense, but most of it will happen one way or another!

The big target these days is anything that runs on fossil fuel and it’s possible that by legislation classic vehicles could slowly be put out to graze and become a distant memory. In that case, then electric conversions might just be the only option (still keep all original running gear tucked away somewhere … you never know). I personally believe that by the 2030 deadline on new vehicles, electric ones will be old hat, with the problems associated with lithium mining etc. – maybe hydrogen will have made serious advances? But whatever happens, I would still like to see a classic Yank rolling down the street powered by anything, than not at all!

Classic cars have managed so far to evade the attention of the authorities and are exempt from a lot things like ULEZ, road tax … even MoTs. While that situation remains we can still hang on to our V8s. For now.
