Greenlight Bullitt Mustang

-

The 1968 Highland Green Ford Mustang fastback that appeared in the film Bullitt and took part in arguably cinema’s most exciting car chase ever, remains popular. Interest was rekindled in January 2020 when the original car that Steve McQueen drove during filming was auctioned in Florida in unrestored condition after 45 years with the same family. Greenlight Collectibles has since released a whole range of Bullitt Mustang models in both contemporary and currently patinated condition, in scales from 1:64 to 1:18. Here’s the 1:18 scale version, a typically heavyweight die-cast replica with opening bonnet and doors.

There is a detailed engine bay with radiator, plug leads, battery and washer bottle. The black interior has matt finish vinyl seats, the correct wood grained dashboard, silver and chromed accents on the steering wheel, instrument binnacles and door furniture. There’s also a white gear knob. The wheels are the correct American Racing Equipment Torq Thrust five-spoke alloys. The grille accurately has no horse emblem and the overall paint finish is not super shiny, but more subtle, which to my eye looks better.

With so many versions of this model produced, prices should be competitive, but still shop around and aim to spend around £75, which is far more reasonable than the $3.74 million the original sold for!
