There are always new books about the iconic Mustang. It’s not surprising. Ford’s original ‘pony car’ has been in continuous production since mid-1964. That’s an incredible feat in itself. The changes and unbroken development over the last half century have been both welcomed, with varying amounts of enthusiasm and sometimes criticised, as Ford sought to maintain sales in its affordable sports car despite competition from GM, Mopar and AMC. They also had to conform to increasingly restrictive legislation and other outside influences. This took skill, imagination and superb marketing. What’s not immediately apparent is the huge number of Mustang special editions that have been produced in nearly 60 years from Ford itself, third party dealers and independent tuners.
This terrific book has compiled details on more than 500 different Mustang variations dating from Ford’s first limited edition 1964 Indianapolis Pace Car replicas to 2018 Shelbys and Saleens. The research that went into this will have been enormous. Some of the models featured are virtually one-offs. The book is divided into chapters dealing with Regular
Production Special Mustangs, Anniversary Editions, Pace and Race Car versions, Commemorative and Tribute cars, Limited Special Production Mustangs, Local and Territorial Special Editions and one relating to Dealers, Tuners and Third Party Specials.
This covers a lot of ground. The authors have researched the promotion, the location the cars were produced for, including massproduced models, the key features and, if known, the production numbers. All the distinguishing features that made the cars special are listed, including, where relevant, VIN codes. It’s clearly a labour of love and better for it. With many fabulous colour photos and contemporary adverts, this is essential reading for the Mustang enthusiast. Highly recommended!
