Have to agree with Huw

Dear Classic American, I absolutely agree with Huw Evans – we lost taste, class and style thanks to computers and greed. We had cars like Mercedes 500k or SL300 gullwing, Jag 120-150, Mk2 or sweet looking Healey frogeye. And all those wonderful American cars. But it is not only cars. Was there ever a more elegant plane than the Lockheed Super Constellation or more elegant a ship than the Cutty Sark?

Today we have container ships and cruise liners that look like East German housing blocks. We had Jacobean, Tudor, Georgian and Edwardian houses. Now we have cement or glass containers called ‘state of the art’ design. The world is getting uglier. Windmills used to be beautiful, yet windfarms are an eyesore. And it’s people too. They walk around in filthy tracksuits or pyjamas and slippers. No pride in anything any more.

Rich captains in Amsterdam used to build beautiful houses to show their wealth, now profit has to be reinvested to make more profit…

It certainly seems that the utilitarian aspects of modern life seem to favour functionality over aesthetics… more’s the pity. However, there is always beauty, if you seek it, wherever in life. And as for our readers? They’d never be seen dead walking around in filthy tracksuits, pyjamas or slippers!
