Mustang Celebration!

-

Dear Classic American,

April 2024 will be the Mustang’s 60th birthday, so we are having a convoy to drive coast-tocoast on April 21 (Drive-it Day), on Route A66. We also had one on its 50th birthday, 10 years ago! Assembly point will be at Penrith, Junction 40 on the M6, with a drive to Workington for the starting point, then following the A66 to Redcar. Only Mustangs with rally lates and route books will be allowed, with any money going to the Great North Air Ambulance. It costs £4,500 every time they take off, so every penny raised is most welcome.

In December’s magazine Huw Evans said about the Pontiac GTO: “The 1966 model proved to be a high watermark, setting a one-year production total for a factory muscle car that has never been beaten, 96,946 cars.” Production figures from 1964 to 2000 show that over 36 years, Mustang production totals only fell below 100,000 during two years. Does he not think a Mustang is a muscle car? I have a brochure from Shelby Mustang saying that if 850bhp is not enough you can have 1100 tyreshredding bhp instead! If anyone is interested in joining our run, drop me a line or call to reserve a place.

What a great cause and aren’t we lucky to have our very own Route 66 here up in the North of England? Although perhaps slightly damper and greyer of course. Regarding Huw’s assertions about the GTO, I think few people would deny that is undoubtedly a muscle car; whereas some Mustangs are muscle cars, but not all Mustangs are… think of the old ‘Secretary Six’ models which frankly couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding!
