CHALLENGING BYWAYS TO TEST YOUR OFF-ROAD CLASSIC IN WALES

-

Strata Florida Difficulty: 9/10

A gruelling 10-mile classic through the Welsh wilderness. Expect many deep river crossings and challenging rock beds. First attempt should only be done after a long dry spell and certainly not alone. Not for the faint-hearted!

Brechfa – Abergorlech Trail Difficulty: 7/10

Seven miles cutting through the dense Brechfa forests. Can be muddy but generally solid enough underfoot. Tough, technical hill climb at the start if coming from Abergorlech direction. Not to be confused with mountain bike trails nearby!

Mynydd Bach Trecastle Difficulty: 5/10

A stunning Roman road across the hill tops near Usk reservoir. Hard, ancient road surface most the way, becoming more rocky and technical near the north. Much easier from south to north. Beware, there can be a very deep water trench halfway through... unexpected so high up!

Claerwen Reservoir Difficulty: 3/10

A mellow gravel but occasionally rocky road that hugs the north of the Claerwen reservoir. Deserted landscape and beautiful views, you could be lost in Mongolia! Avoid Monks Trod trail a few km north, which is only passable at certain times and with a permit. If you’re not confident at finding trails yourself, Tim and Sean at Big Bikes on Byways know the green lanes of England and Wales insideout. You can hop onto one of their tours or they will happily guide a route for a group. Prices are very reasonable. www.bigbikesonbyways.com
