Classic Bike Guide

We were saddened to note the death in June of one of the UK’s greatest motorcycle designers of the past 50 years. Steve Harris, founder of Harris Performance Products, had struggled with Parkinson’s disease for some time. Steve and Lester Harris and Stephen Bayford founded Harris in 1972, building road racers for TT and Grand Prix competition, building racing frames for Yamaha racers including Barry Sheene, running Suzuki’s World Superbike Team for three years. For road riders the Harris Magnum frame is the brand’s bestknown product, along with the Harribox that influenced sports bike design. A streetfighter wasn’t a streetfighter without a Harris 4-1 exhaust system. More recently Harris Performance developed the frame for Royal Enfield’s Continental GT and Himalayan adventure bike, a partnership so successful that the Indian company bought Harris in 2015 and the Harris brothers retired. After a long illness, Steve died on June 15 at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Gillian, and two children, James and Katie.
