PLATED BORES
SCEM stands for Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material, a nickel-silicion carbide coating plated onto on the barrel bores. Also used in ’60s Suzuki Grand Prix engines and the rotor chamber of the 1975-77 RE5, the coating replaced iron liners used with chrome-plated piston rings in GT550M/A/B engines in 1975. Its advantages over liners are: reduced piston-tobore clearance for better heat dispersion and quieter running, durability, the ability to be made good by lapping after a minor seizure, and a small weight saving. Worn-out bores can be replated.
