PRACTICAL ’70s CLASSIC
Torquey mid-range performance and smooth, effortless cruising are among the GT550’S attractions as a practical classic. The odd-looking engine and typically ’70s styling make for an eyecatching period piece, rarely seen on the road nowadays. Weighing 200kg (441lb) dry makes it heavier than a 750cc Kawasaki two-stroke triple.
In a well-used or long-idle engine, the crankshaft seals will need replacement and there may be wear in the cylinders and transmission. It is not a difficult engine to work on and only a few spares are a headache. Expect to pay from £3000 upwards for a clean, running examples – and the best ones are soon snapped up.
