Yamaha trials iron on the verge of road legality
GEZ KANE When he started his TY175 project, Gez thought it’d be finished within the year. Three years later, it’s on the verge of total readiness...
Predictably, I haven’t got round to painting the exhaust heat shield, ordering decals or finishing the TY’S running-in. But I have started the registration process. My own research indicated the bike was manufactured in late 1977 – confirmed by Paul Dawkins of the Air-cooled RD Club’s dating site (motorbikeregistrations.co.uk).
A couple of details and snaps of the bike and Paul had a Dvlaapproved dating letter back to me. The cost is £30 to non-club members. Then it was NOVA declaration and V55/5 time.
Other people struggling to get their old trials irons on the road had recommended David Williams at Vehicle Registration Services (dvlaadvice.co.uk), so I decided to give him a go. For £95, he’ll get your bike on the NOVA register, fill in the V55/5 correctly and help with any glitches along the way. As my bike is pre-’78, it now no longer needs an MOT or road tax. So, apart from the £55 fee for first registration, that should be just about it on the expense side. Phew.
