MKII Interceptor 1968-1970

-

Engine number prefix: 1B. Approximate production figure: just over 1100.

The first MKII Interceptor is registered in the UK on October 27, 1967, and represents a serious revamp. At the heart of that is the new wet-sump engine, but there are also changes to the ignition system, forks, and front brake. A sump guard, air filter, pillion grab rail and oil cooler are listed as optional extras for the first MKIIS, and all become standard equipment for 1970. With the company’s financial woes mounting, the last Interceptor engines are produced in July that year. Limited production of Rickman Interceptors, using left over stocks of engines, continues into 1972.

Engine: Wet-sump engine features finned sump under crankcases, a new timing cover and a revised clutch on the very last models. Ignition: Coil ignition is retained, but the points are now actuated by a cam on the end of the exhaust camshaft and housed under the new timing cover. A capacitor in the ignition circuit allows the bike to be started even with a flat battery. Brakes: With Norton Villiers now in charge, a much-needed front brake upgrade comes in the shape of the sls 8in unit from the Norton Atlas. A tls front brake is fitted on later models. Forks: The old Enfield units make way for Norton’s Roadholder forks in another welcome addition to the front end of the Interceptor. Other details: Revised silencers and front mudguard are fitted.
