25 bikes and counting

From 1964 to 2018 I have owned 25 bikes. The early ones were mainly cheap rubbish to get me about, the middle period ones slightly better rubbish, and then as I moved on to buying new bikes, they were the classics of their day. They have provided memories such as: drunkenly riding the length of the Deauville beach on my Royal Enfield Connie 700, thundering thorough the Scheldt Tunnel at 2am on my BSA A10, being pursued by the cops down the Massachusetts Pike on my Ducati 750 GT and so forth. Many of the bikes that I gave away or simply abandoned now fetch huge sums – don’t know why, they are as horrible now as they were then! Recalling the history of my biking life, and all the various scrapes, I am faintly surprised and grateful to be alive today. But life continues – as you read this, I will probably be upsetting my neighbours in North London with the Ducati’s Conti ‘silencers’ barking into life as, yet again, I head off for a spin PAUL DALE

Paul, about to annoy his neighbours again with the Ducati 750 GT he’s owned since 1975
