SCOTT SPECIAL

-

“This is an unashamed tuner’s special, built in the tradition of people like Beart and Lacey who took stock stuff to make great motorcycles,” says Roger Moss of his 1934 Scott. “I spent my life making machine tools and doing development; I even worked on Harrier engines with Rolls-royce.”

Roger says his engine gives 45bhp, compared to the standard 600cc’s 18bhp and has huge torque. “You could get 31bhp with gas flowing – I got it to 35.4 when Paul Dobbs was racing it and he used to battle with Manx Nortons! But then the bike was banned at Oulton Park by the VMCC for being too noisy. They said I could fit a silencer, but didn’t say what kind, so I developed this expansion chamber exhaust. It’s now got a power output similar to a Vintage Rapide. To get it through noise tests, I bumped it backwards – the engine sounds as flat as a fart.”

Roger made the engine, gearbox, brakes and pipes. “It’s probably the most extreme special ever,” he claims. “The engine has different crank and deflector pistons – I’m the only man in the world with the dies for the original Scott pistons. It’s got an alloy barrel instead of iron – with knowledge I gained from working on TZ Yamahas, its got some radical porting. I’ve reworked the gas passages.”

Roger’s bike is unusual in that it has a Scott four-speed gearbox instead of the stock three speeder. “I’ve reworked the selectors and I think I’ve got the only working fourspeeder in the world,” he says.

“The stock carb is so small but George Silk used 38mm Concentric so that’s what this has – a 38mm Concentric in a party dress! It pulls from 2000rpm right through to 5100 and, with a George Brown-style sprint fairing I’ve got, I reckon it should be good for 140mph!”
