Mert Lawwill had been the AMA Grand National Champion in 1969 on a Harley, but the unreliable iron-barrel XR750 engine had ruined his hopes of retaining that title and would continue to thwart his efforts, particularly in road races. In this race, however, Lawwill crashed on the 12th lap and broken his elbow and wrist.
