Gene Romero was the reigning AMA Grand National Champion and had one of four new ‘Lowboy’ works Triples in the race (Smart, Hailwood and Mann had the others). For the second year in succession, Romero finished a runnerup to Mann at Daytona. Romero’s turn to win the race would come in 1975 on a Yamaha TZ750.
