PROJECTED VALUE

- Simon Hubbard, Brownhills, West Midlands

I was interested to note Rick Parkington’s comments re: the affordability of ‘projects’ (Rick’s Fixes, February). For some while, I have been looking for a CB72/77 to restore (my first bike, JTV 704E, which was bomb-proof and hugely over-engineered, sold for £110 delivered to Gloucestershire from Essex in my dad’s Maxi). Recently a 1964 rusty ‘Read Titan’ CB77 sold for £3600 (plus auction costs and transport) on ebay. Given that, if done up to concours standard, it will be worth at most £6000, which leaves £2400 to find all of the missing parts and refurbish it. That can’t be done. Please people, you may want to play in your garage/shed, but try to keep a sense of proportion when bidding and don’t allow our wonderful hobby to be priced out of existence by those after a quick buck.
