Wharram Hui this summer
The 'hui' (gathering) to celebrate the lives of James and Ruth Wharram will be held over the weekend of 23-24 July (with some leeway in case of bad weather). There will be a parade of sail out of Falmouth, following the catamaran Mana, which be moored at Customhouse Quay. All admirers of Wharram, who died in December last year, are invited to join the parade of sail, including monohulls and other multihulls.
The ashes of James and Ruth will be scattered out at sea on the outgoing tide, remembering their first voyage out of Falmouth on Tangaroa in 1955, the pioneering voyage that started the global Wharram movement that still thrives today.
The event follows the traditional boat festivals in Brest and Douarnenez earlier in July. Anyone attending Douarnenez ‘Temps Fête’ (14-17 July) will have a week to sail across to Cornwall to attend the Hui, weather permitting.
