THE COAMING IN ALASTAIR GARLAND’S OWN WORDS

-

The teak, egg-shaped coaming is laminated. Jigs were made up of the front, back and two sides. The teak was milled down to about 3/32 laminates that would bend around comfortable. When laminating the forward and aft ones, drill a hole about 3/16 near the top in the centre put a copper nail in this. It acts as a locater when gluing. Bend the laminates round the jig to dry. Leave for week or two. That takes the kick out of them.

Then glue up and hope. Must be totally prepared. The front and back are fitted first and set in place for good, followed by the sides with shoulder scarphs inside and out.

The coaming was a reclaimed teak door from an old barge. It hung around home for years. The scarphs had to go where they fell as length was an issue with about 2in to spare.
